If you’ve decided to move your cycling history to a local dashboard or simply want a backup, you’ll need to deal with the GPX format. Here is a quick guide on what it is and how to get your files out of the «big clouds.»
What is GPX?
GPX (GPS Exchange Format) is an XML-based text format. Think of it as the «MP3 of the fitness world.» Inside, it stores your coordinates, timestamps, elevation, and sometimes sensor data like heart rate or cadence.
The biggest advantage of GPX is that it’s an open standard. Almost every GPS device, app, and analytics tool understands it. This is exactly what BikeNote uses to build your personal heatmaps and stats.
How to Export from Garmin Connect
Garmin allows you to download individual rides or your entire history.
For a single ride:
- Log into the Garmin Connect web portal.
- Open a specific activity.
- Click the «gear» icon in the top right corner.
- Select «Export to GPX».
For your entire history (Bulk Export): To get all your rides at once, go to Garmin’s Account Management page and request a «Data Export.» Garmin will send you a link to a ZIP archive containing every activity you’ve ever uploaded.
How to Export from Wahoo
Wahoo handles things differently, focusing on their mobile app rather than a web portal.
- Open the ELEMNT companion app on your phone.
- Go to the «History» tab.
- Select an activity.
- Tap the «Share» icon in the top right.
- Choose «GPX» and send the file to your email or save it to your phone’s storage.
What to Do with These Files?
Once you have your GPX files, using them is incredibly simple. You don’t need to «import» them into a cloud database.
Just open BikeNote and choose «Upload GPX». The app will automatically parse the coordinates, smooth out the elevation noise, and update your local database instantly.
